The NEREiDE project aims to demonstrate the use of new porous asphalt pavements and low noise surfaces constructed by using RAP, crumb rubber from scrap tires and warm mix technologies, as a valuable solution for reducing the road traffic noise, for increasing the use of reclaimed materials in new (and rehabilitated) pavements, for reducing carbon emissions during paving operations and, at the same time, for improving road safety.

Thus, the project will undertake a characterization and qualification of raw materials, and it will find the most suitable manufacturing processes of crumb rubber in order to modify the vulcanized rubber, obtained from end of life tires, and to make it suitable for incorporation in the bitumen. The bitumen will act as a binder and as a matrix of the new composite material, with structural and waterproofing functions, helping to prevent the leaching of chemicals contained in the tire rubber.

The development of this innovative road pavements will be done through lab tests that will select their correct composition, the grading curve and the structural characteristics, the percentage of crumb rubber and the methods to realize them. Then a first laying of experimental surfaces will be performed in Tuscany and in Belgium.

In order to monitor performances, the CPX and the pass-by method will be used to measure the noise produced by tires rolling on the reference pavements and on the innovative ones. The pass-by will be adapted to the urban reality, minimizing the confounding factors. New evaluation methods of sound absorption on board of a mobile laboratory will allow to evaluate the absorption in a reproducible manner and without the use of destructive methods (that are usually analysed in laboratory conditions). The new evaluation methods will allow a better reliability of monitoring results, helping the choice between new asphalts with better performances. In addition, an evaluation of psychoacoustical effects on local population will be carried out. Surveys will be performed to evaluate annoyance and sleep disturbances differences produced by new surfaces. In fact both standard and new methods and surveys too will be performed ante- and post-operam.

In order to fulfil the scope of the project, 13 trial sections will be designed and constructed by using different types of wearing course mixtures (one mix per trial section). The trial sections will be constructed within two urban areas in Tuscany (Italy) at two different paving periods. Furthermore, a small test track of PERS mixture will be constructed and tested in Belgium. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of new pavements, following a before-after approach, the mechanical and functional (including noise performance) characteristics of the existing and of the new-constructed pavements will be monitored with time.




The first implementation site is composed of 6 contiguous stretches identified on two road sections of a regional road, SRT 439 “Sarzanese-Valdera”, in the municipality of Massarosa (Lucca, Tuscany); the trial sections, referred to as “Section I” and “Section II”, are located as follows (Fig 1 and Fig. 2Error! Reference source not found.). Two of the six mixtures including crumb rubber by wet process have been laid on Section I (Pian del Quercione); each experimental wearing course is about 400 m long. The remaining 4, 2 of them include crumb rubber by dry process  and 2 HMA control mixtures, have been laid on Section II (Bozzano/Quiesa).



The second implementation site is composed of six road sections identified on the regional road SRT 71 “Umbro Casentinese” in the municipality of Arezzo (Tuscany) and Castiglion Fiorentino (Arezzo, Tuscany).
